December 2024 marks Universal Human Rights Month. Human Rights Day is celebrated on December 10th, yet the movement is recognized throughout the whole month of December. This month holds its importance as it is the month that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights document was brought into light, back in 1948. This landmark document shares the undeniable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being. This is regardless of any race, color, upbringing, social status, political views, language, etc.
Each year, Universal Human Rights Month has its own unique and individual theme. This year the theme for Universal Human Rights Month is “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now.” In recent years, there has been a strain in human rights. As the world faces tough challenges, the UDHR serves as a guide for how we should be treating one another. The theme of this month serves as a way of emphasizing the importance of equality for people of all walks of life. Human rights can empower communities to work towards a more peaceful tomorrow. We have the opportunity to speak up against hate speech, correct misinformation, and advocate for ourselves and others.
Here are some ways you can participate in Universal Human Rights Month:
Read books/listen to podcasts about others experiences.
Volunteer your time to the underprivileged communities.
Participate in educational resources; discussions, webinars, etc.
Contribute to fundraisers and charity.
Mentor youth, young professionals, and neighbors.
