During the month of April, we bring awareness to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a developmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts, and experiences the world around them. ASD is characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and nonverbal communication. According to the CDC, approximately 1 in 36 children and 1 in 45 adults are diagnosed with ASD.
Because autism exists on a spectrum, it is different in every person who is diagnosed. Each individual with ASD faces unique challenges in daily life while also showcasing their own set of strengths. Those with ASD can also experience co-occurring mental and physical health conditions such as ADHD/ADD, anxiety, depression, gastrointestinal issues, and neurological disorders.
ASD is a lifelong condition that can present differently across genders. Over time, an individual's strengths, challenges, and support needs may evolve, requiring continued understanding and adaptation.
