Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) Awareness Month

Each May is recognized as Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) Awareness Month. During this month mental health professionals dedicate time to raise awareness and reduce stigma. The aim of raising awareness is to increase understanding, encourage compassion, and support those living with BPD and their loved ones.

Borderline Personality Disorder is a mental health condition characterized by intense emotional instability, difficulty maintaining relationships, distorted self-image, and impulsive behavior. Individuals who are diagnosed with BPD often experience a deep fear of abandonment,  mood shifts, and feelings of emptiness. Due to these symptoms, early diagnosis is crucial to get effective treatment.

Awareness of BPD is often misrepresented in popular culture and misunderstood by the public. The stigma that comes alongside BPD can lead to shame, isolation, and inadequate care for those affected. BPD Awareness Month aims to change those perceptions.

Here are some signs and Symptoms to Know:

  • Intense fear of abandonment, real or perceived

  • Unstable interpersonal relationships

  • Identity disturbance and shifting self-image

  • Impulsive behaviors

  • Recurrent suicidal behavior or self-harm

  • Mood swings

  • Chronic feelings of emptiness

  • Intense or inappropriate anger

  • Temporary paranoia or dissociation under stress

Awareness of these signs can promote empathy and encourage those affected to seek professional help.

By promoting awareness, we take one step closer to a world where no one with BPD feels alone or misunderstood.
