Mental health is often overlooked when it comes to talking about our overall wellness. It plays
an important role in our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It influences how we
think, build relationships, and make everyday decisions. When we realize that mental health is a
key part of our well-being, it becomes easier to understand why our minds need as much care
as our bodies.
For many people, including myself, talking about mental health wasn’t always acceptable.
Mental health has always had a huge stigma in my family and in our culture. Whenever
someone struggled with anxiety or depression, we were told to brush it under the rug rather than
acknowledge it. As a result, a lot of family members ended up projecting their unprocessed
stress or pain onto the people they loved, which shaped their relationships as they got older.
Not getting the adequate care you need at the right time doesn’t just impact your future, it
affects those around you as well.
The bright side is that nowadays, people are becoming more comfortable talking about mental
health and being open about seeking help when needed. It’s important to always address your
struggles and break the generational stigma around mental health.
