Loving someone who is struggling with depression can feel overwhelming and disoriented. You
may find yourself longing for the version of them who felt more lively, engaged or emotionally
connected. It’s important to remember that depression changes how a person feels, but it doesn’t
change who they are.
Depression impacts more than a person's mood. According to the National Institute of Mental
Health, it can disrupt sleep, concentration, appetite and overall physical health. This means that
your partner may seem withdrawn, irritable or deeply overwhelmed.
It’s important to keep these things in mind:
-Try Not To Fix It
Depression isn’t something you can fix. Well-intentioned comments can unintentionally make
your partner feel misunderstood or as if they’re failing for not being “able to snap out of it”.
Instead of trying to fix it, it’s crucial that you validate their feelings and what they’re
experiencing. Acknowledging that it feels heavy, exhausting, or overwhelming helps them feel
seen rather than corrected. Being a support and safe space for your partner is the first step in
helping them through these hard moments
-Celebrate Small Wins
Always acknowledge your partner’s effort, whether it’s getting out of bed, going on a walk or
even something as small as taking a shower. Some days will be harder than others and it’s
important that they know that their effort is being acknowledged. Small steps are big victories.
-Encourage Professional Help
Individuals who are going through depression might see professional help as a weakness– it’s
important to remind them that support is a sign of courage and self-awareness.
Being there for a partner with depression isn’t about finding the perfect words — it’s about
showing up with patience, empathy, and consistency.
You can’t fix someone’s depression, but you can remind them that they’re not alone and that
they’re cared for, even on their hardest days.
