Have you ever felt super awkward in a therapy session when it is silent and your therapist isn’t starting to talk? It’s not you, it’s them! There are many therapeutic reasons why therapists intentionally use silence in sessions. Just know, nothing has gone wrong! Embrace and lean into the discomfort.
Your therapist might be silent because…
They are processing what you shared and want to give it more thought.
They are staying in the present moment and empathizing with you.
They are reflecting and want to respond with the appropriate language.
They are respecting your time and pace, and want the space to feel safe for you.
They are allowing you to sit in the feelings that are arising.
They are observing and noticing non-verbal cues and body language.
How is Silence Helpful?
Silence promotes self awareness and reflection, giving you the space to tune into inner experiences and use mindfulness practices. Having moments without external input is essential for growth and healing.
Silence removes some of the pressure to respond immediately and give the “right answer.”
Silence may allow for deeper insights that aren’t initially obvious to the therapist and the client. This can uncover buried emotions and lead to many breakthroughs!
Silence can communicate that it is okay to pause, and not necessarily know what is next. It is safe to explore our feelings here without judgment or expectations!
What is Your Therapist Thinking During the Silence?
They are so much stronger than they think they are!
I wish they could see what I see.
They have no idea how close to home this hits for me.
I hope they show me a picture!
I am so glad they feel safe enough to cry here.
I was hoping they would bring this up.
I am so proud of them!
They deserve so much better.
